Once a bottle fed baby, always a bottle fed baby

Kick one group off the alfalfa to let the other group on

Just a little bit of life lately

-The horses came back for the winter and we love having them
-We added chickens and ducks to our ever growing number of animals
-The goats have had their babies (kids) and they love the warm weather we have had
-We still have sheep, lots and lots of sheep
-The five year old has learned to drive and feeds every morning with dad
-We have our first bum of the season, Nebechadnezzar (Nebbie)
-We worked on more house projects (always something)
-We have been trying to soak in this slower season as lambing season quickly approaches

Teenage me is absolutely ecstatic because we officially have our own cows!

Everyone has heard the term “less is more” and this statement holds true for the food we eat. When you shop from local farmers/ ranchers you get less preservatives, less ingredients that you can’t pronounce, and better quality produce, dairy, and meat.

Most ranchers and farmers are even more than happy to tell you (or show you) the feed mix they use for their livestock and what procedures they use to raise animals and crops!

Many farm and ranch operations are operated by families. This means the parents and kids get to work together in order to make things run smoothly. This allows kids to begin working with animals and crops at a young age. It teaches them how to raise animals, how to work hard, and gives them a greater appreciation for where their food comes from

This has been the best thing to watch with my own kids as they love getting to sort sheep, drive the tractor, feed the goats, irrigate, and pick fresh vegetables.

When you support local, you allow generational farms to continue. You give the farmer a chance to take the kids along to work everyday, to pass on the tradition of hard work, love of the land, raising food for the community, and respect for the livestock.

Unfortunately a true story I heard of why someone will not support ranchers is the use of guard dogs.

The argument was that using dogs to guard livestock was abuse to the dog and that we should allow nature to run its course (I.e. prey be torn apart by predators)

I was a little taken back that people truly thought this but let’s clear it up. Working dogs LIVE to work. They go absolutely insane if they cannot do what they are bred to do. Our guard dogs will refuse to come in the house and they barely use the shelter provided when the weather turns bad. They are raised with the herd and create a very special bond. They have a sense that tells them where their herd is from miles away (even if they never saw where the herd moved, they will and have found them on their own). Dog breeds are so different and they deserve to be treated differently, it would be unfair for us to decide that all dogs should be house dogs.
